Christmas Just Went to the Gym: Red One (2024) Is Pure Holiday Chaos with Muscles

Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans team up for a Christmas movie that feels like Santa took a pre-workout before saving the holidays.

Red One (2024)

Every year, Hollywood gives us at least one Christmas movie that’s supposed to make us feel warm and fuzzy inside. This time, Red One said, “Nah, let’s make Santa shredded and add some explosions while we’re at it.”

And honestly? I’m not mad about it.

This movie is what happens when someone mixes The Fast and the Furious with Elf and forgets to hit the brakes. It’s chaotic, over-the-top, and absolutely self-aware of how ridiculous it is — and that’s what makes it kind of great.

When Santa Gets a Six-Pack

JK Simmons is ludicrously ripped to play Santa in Dwayne Johnson's Red One | GamesRadar+
When your personal trainer is The Rock, you find the strength you never knew you had.

So the basic idea: Santa Claus (aka “The Big Guy,” played by J.K. Simmons in full muscle mode) gets kidnapped.
Cue Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Callum Drift, the commander of the North Pole’s security force (yes, that’s a thing), and Chris Evans as Jack O’Malley, a bounty hunter with questionable morals and perfect hair.

Together, they team up to save Christmas — and probably destroy half the world in the process.

It’s dumb. It’s loud. It’s fun.
Like watching your two uncles argue during Christmas dinner but with more car chases and CGI snow.

Action, Abs, and Absolute Chaos

The team-up we didn't know we needed.

Let’s be honest: Red One doesn’t even pretend to be subtle. The action scenes are pure blockbuster brain candy — explosions covered in tinsel. The Rock does his usual thing (saving the world while looking like he could bench-press a reindeer), and Chris Evans brings the sarcastic chaos energy that balances everything out.

Their chemistry? Surprisingly good. It’s like watching the world’s most jacked elf team up with a sarcastic mall cop who hates Christmas — somehow, it works.

Also, shoutout to the worldbuilding. There’s this whole secret agency that protects holiday traditions, mythical creatures, and literal Christmas tech. It’s so unnecessary… but I love it.

Christmas Chaos with Heart

Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson's Christmas movie gets mixed reactions
When Santa hires security for the busy holiday season. Who's checking the list now?

Beneath all the chaos, there’s still a tiny spark of Christmas magic. The film has this weirdly sweet message about believing in something bigger than yourself — even if that “something” involves Santa’s sleigh getting rocket-boosted.

It’s not deep, but it’s genuine. And in a world where everything feels so serious all the time, watching a movie that just has fun with itself feels like a gift.

Final Thoughts

What to know about 'Red One,' with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Chris Evans, which streams on Prime Video on December 12
Not your average sleigh ride. When Santa's reindeers look ready for battle.

Red One isn’t trying to be a Christmas classic. It’s trying to be the movie you watch every December when you just want to turn your brain off and laugh at something chaotic and over-the-top.

And on that level, it totally delivers.

So yeah — this Christmas, forget the hot cocoa. Grab some popcorn, turn on Red One, and let The Rock save the holidays with his biceps.

Because apparently, even Christmas needs a little action hero energy.
